Photo Monday

An incredible photograph of Dennis Hopper and director Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause, Johnny Guitar).

Hopper, who played a minor role in Rebel, was at the time romantically linked to the film's lead actress, Natalie Wood. During production, Wood, then only 16, also became sexually involved with Ray -- who was 27 years her elder.  Ray and Hopper remained on bad terms for many years until, as rumor has it, they reunited at a 1970 Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore East and called a truce.

A much younger Dennis Hopper pictured here (second from left) in Rebel Without a Cause (1955).

while you were out cutting and pasting your matinee idols from the 50's, you were outscooped by the fellas at hidden track.

also, ties in nicely with the newly released bonus version of Exile on Main Street...phenomenal album, with a phenomenal folkloric mythology, like the Basement Tapes on Steriods, er Mescalin/uppers/downers/Jack Daniels/acid/herb/H, and god knows what else.

"Matinee idols??" Dennis Hopper is arguably THE reason why the entire counter-culture movement even exists -- a movement which greatly influenced and ultimately spawned bands like...Phish. He brought the scene to the general public when everyone else was still listening to Gerry and the Pacemakers and Herman's Hermits.

Unlike Hidden Track -- which I've always enjoyed perusing -- we're just a small, grassroots operation with little resources and even less time to share our thoughts on music, film, etc.

You know I always appreciate your comments Mr. AK, but don't forget your roots man.

Fair enough.

My roots grew from seeds strewn on the grounds in the early dawning hours following W.S. Wolcott's traveling Medicine show's final pass through town.

p.s. ever see old twilight zone episodes where your confronted with very young and strangely lit images of Dennis Hopper, Robert Redford, and/or Telly Savalas? weird.....man....just weird.

Have I?!? I grew up watching T.Z. and have been watching the marathons on Sci-Fi every new years day for like the past decade!

I don't doubt your roots man --you've taught me a good thing or two...

(I'm still waiting for an official AK submission on The Low Anthem...)
