The Weight

I don't think I've ever heard a bad rendition of The Band's 'The Weight'.  Honestly. I've heard dozens of them and we've posted quite a few of them on this site.  There is something magical about the rotating vocals on the verses, the sing-along chorus, and the basic chord structure that makes it so much fun to play.

This version isn't just good, its great.  It comes from the Elvis Costello-hosted music/interview show Spectacle.  This episode aired in December 2009 and it features host Elvis Costello and his band The Imposters, Levon Helm, Richard Thompson, Ray LaMontagne, Allen Toussaint, Nick Lowe, and Larry Campbell.  This was recorded for the same episode that also included a take on the Dead's Tennessee Jed, which we posted a few weeks ago.

as someone lucky enough to be in attendance during this taping, i want to chime in and say the whole show was awesome. Highlights include live versions of stuff that never made it to the television broadcast.

i remember a rag mama rag, and some early Elvis tunes performed as though the Band was playing them, maybe blame it on cain? i cant remember, but it was awesome.

my only complaint, the weird promos and commercial breaks and then watching them doing that fantastic version of The Weight to close the show, thunderous applause and a standing ovation, and then like 5 minutes later, they played the whole thing again...and we all had to pretend like we didnt just watch them do this...sometimes you dont want to see the marionette's strings...

also..
the pre-show man-date margarita up in harlem wasnt bad either.

Thought of your website last night when while in a bar, jukebox played The Weight followed by Cripple Creek followed by The Weight again. Nobody seemed to mind the repeat.
